Manchester City comfortably beat their neighbors Utd 6-3 in the Manchester derby on Sunday to close down Arsenal at the top to one point after eight games played.

The citizens opened the score board inside the fourth minute through Phil Foden who beautifully found the right top corner after Joao Cancelo capitalized on Scott MacTominay’s error and rolled out his pass to the unmarked David Silva who eventually squared it to Foden. City maintained the pressure throughout the first half as they kept knocking for more and it didn’t last long before they doubled the lead. Haaland’s header went over the goal line after Kevin Debruyne had crafted a corner kick in the 34th minutes to find the Norwegian. Tyrel Malacia tried to clear the ball but it was too late for the visitors. Earlier, Ikay Gundogan had his free kick striking the post and causing uproar to their fans.

Guardiola’s men kept the pressure and intensity high up the pitch and three minutes after the second goal, Erling Haaland found the back of the net again and making it 3-0. Foden made it 4 before half time after De Bruyne combined well with Haaland with the former Dortmund striker squaring it to the 22 year old English youngster who seemed too smart and strong for Malacia before converting it past De Gea.

United responded with a goal through summer signing Antony 10 minutes after resumption of the second half with his relentless effort from 25 yards going past Ederson. This didn’t stop the reigning champions from piling more misery to Ten Hag’s men as both Haaland & Foden separately forced goals past De Gea to complete their hat tricks in the 64th and 73rd minutes respectively. This marked Haaland’s third hat trick in eight games. The on fire city talisman has found the back of the net 9 times in three consecutive home games for City since moving to Etihad from Signal Iduna Park.

Anthony Martial spared United blashes as he scored a brace in the dying minutes. The French man capitalized on a rebound after Ederson failed to collect Fred’s shot which he parred into Martial’s path. Coming off the bench to replace unreliable Marcus Rashford, Martial would later make it 3 for united from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Cancelo inside the box.

United were left in tatters by their noisy neighbors whose fans even cheered on their behalf as Martial completed his brace as most of the United fans had left the stadium by half time. This was an utter humiliation derby to Manchester United fans and former coach Sir Alex Ferguson who was in attendance.

“Very heavy. We feel it as a very bad day at the office. We didn’t start well. We missed a bit of courage to play it from the back and that let them play. We only have ourselves to blame. Far from acceptable, ” said Christian Eriksen in the post match interview. Although Pep Guardiola’s team won the game, the gaffer felt that his team still had improvements to make as they conceded three goals from a team they entirely dominated. “We can win or lose but there are many things we can do better. Some players were not good today so they have to improve.”Perfection doesn’t exist, it’s impossible. But we must try to look there. We did good, we can do better, many, many players had sloppy passes. This is not good. We have to be more consistent. In some areas we were still not good,” Guardiola said.

This was the first time that City put 6 past Manchester United in a home game as the last time they hammered United 6-1 was away at Old Trafford in 2011.

Manchester City now turn focus to the upcoming champions league in mid-week with City hosting Fc Kobenhavn on Wednesday.
