viraleflare - Creating a lifestyle of happiness

After spending an unforgettable 4-day vacation in Kilifi on a budget, I want to share my personal experience along with comprehensive insights about this magical coastal town for anyone planning to visit

Introduction

Located about 60 kilometers north of Mombasa, Kilifi blends stunning beaches, rich history, and vibrant local culture, all while remaining affordable for budget travelers.

Getting to Kilifi

From Nairobi

You have several options to reach Kilifi from Nairobi:

Flying + Ground Transport

Fly to Mombasa Moi international Airport
Take a bolt/ Uber to Buxton stage in Mombasa (700 Ksh)
Board a Matatu to Kilifi (300 Ksh, 2-hour drive)
Use tuk-tuk for final transport to accommodation (250 Ksh)

SGR Train: (Budget friendly)

Take the SGR from Nairobi to Mombasa (1,500 Ksh)
Connect to Kilifi via matatu (250 Ksh) or Uber (5000 Ksh)

Direct Bus: (Cheapest of all)

Several companies offer overnight buses (Tahmeed, Mash Poa, Bus Car, Dreamline, Simba Coach etc)
Journey takes 9-10 hours
Costs around 1500 Ksh-1,800 Ksh

Self-Drive

Approximately 7-8 hour drive
Beautiful scenery along the way
Consider overnight stops in Voi or Tsavo

From Mombasa

If you’re already in Mombasa, regular matatus ply to Kilifi throughout the day (300 Ksh, 2 hours). Taxis and Bolt are also available but slightly more expensive.

Where to Stay: Budget-Friendly Options

Airbnbs with Pools: The Smart Choice

Kilifi on a budget
Tamarind Villa pool

For the best value experience, I strongly recommend booking an Airbnb with a swimming pool near the beach. Here’s why:

  • Kilifi’s hot climate makes pool access invaluable
  • More affordable than hotels with similar amenities
  • Kitchen access for self-catering saves on food costs
  • Often located near beaches
  • Perfect for families or groups

My Experience: Tamarind Villa

Visiting-kilifi-on-a budget-Tamarind-Villa
Tamarind Villa in Bofa beach

I stayed at Tamarind Villa, a gem on Bofa Beach:

  • 5,000 Ksh per night per room (low season) 7,000 Ksh (high season)
  • Entire house: 20,000 Ksh (low season) or 40,000 Ksh (high season)
  • 4 double ensuite bedrooms plus additional sleeping areas
  • Set on 7 acres, just 30 meters from the beach

Amenities included:

  • Swimming pool
  • Private beach access (1 minute away)

Food on a Budget

Self-Catering Strategy

I found the most economical approach was shopping at Naivas supermarket in Kilifi town and preparing meals at our villa. This saved us significantly compared to eating out for every meal.

Local Eats Worth Trying

When you do eat out, try these affordable local options:

  • Mama Ngina’s for authentic Swahili dishes
  • Fish markets for fresh seafood you can have cooked on the spot
  • Baobab meals (when in season)
  • Bahari
  • Fayaz
  • Village dishes

Upscale Options for a Treat

For a special meal:

  • Boathouse for sunset views over Kilifi Creek
  • Mnarani Club restaurant
  • Distant Relatives’ farm-to-table offerings
  • Kilifi Bay beach resort

Must-Do Activities in Kilifi

Visiting Kilifi on a budget Mnarani ruins
Mnarani Ruins

During my stay, we enjoyed the villa’s pool, but Kilifi offers many affordable activities:

  • Mnarani Ruins (which we visited)
  • 15th century mosques
  • Ancient tombs
  • Stunning views of Kilifi Creek
  • Entrance fee of 250 Ksh
  • Beaches:
  • Bofa Beach (where our villa was located)
  • Kilifi Creek’s calm waters
  • Watamu Beach (day trip)
  • Vasco da Gamma pillar (Malindi)
  • Turtle bay (Watamu)
  • Marine park (Watamu)
  • Water Activities:
  • Dhow sailing on Kilifi Creek
  • Snorkeling at Vuma Cliffs
  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Kayaking through mangroves
  • Cultural Experiences:
  • Kilifi town market (Thursdays and Saturdays)
  • Mida Creek boardwalk
  • Gede Ruins (slightly further but worth it)
  • Local music performances
  • Nature:
  • Arabuko Sokoke Forest
  • Bird watching along the creek
  • Sunset walks along the beaches
Watamu beach

Practical Tips for Budget Travelers

  1. Visit during low season (May-July, September-November) for better rates
  2. Book accommodations directly rather than through platforms when possible
  3. Use local transportation (matatus, tuk-tuks) rather than taxis
  4. Self-cater most meals, splurging occasionally on local experiences
  5. Bring cash as ATMs can be limited (though there are several in Kilifi town)
  6. Learn basic Swahili phrases to better connect with locals
  7. Pack light but bring sunscreen (it’s expensive to buy locally)

Nightlife in Kilifi

While not as vibrant as Mombasa or Malindi, Kilifi has its charm:

  • Distant Relatives hosts regular events
  • Boathouse for sundowners
  • Beach bonfires (arrange through your accommodation)
  • Local bars in Kilifi town

When to Visit

  • Peak Season (December-January, July-August): Busiest and most expensive
  • Shoulder Season (February-April): Good weather, fewer crowds
  • Low Season (May-June, September-November): Best deals, occasional rain

Safety Tips

Kilifi is generally safe, but take normal precautions:

  • Don’t walk alone on beaches at night
  • Use reputable tuk-tuk drivers
  • Keep valuables secure
  • Be aware of strong currents when swimming
  • Drink bottled or filtered water

My Return Journey

When it was time to leave, I took a direct bus from Kilifi to Nairobi for 1,500 Ksh, which was much more economical than the SGR train & flight option. The journey took about 9 hours, but the savings were worth it for our budget.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Kilifi on a budget offers the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, culture, and natural beauty without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a solo traveler, couple, or family, this coastal gem delivers an authentic Kenyan experience that’s accessible to budget-conscious visitors. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable yet memorable coastal getaway.

Not just traders but I know most Kenyans have asked themselves this question of how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya. Well, investing in the stock exchange can be one of the most profitable ways to grow your wealth over time, but it can also seem intimidating, especially if you’re new to it.And by intimidating I don’t mean trading in the stock market is like gambling like most people presume –the stock market is influenced by an array of factors ranging from inflation, GDP growth, interest rates to unemployment.

In Kenya, the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) provides an accessible platform for anyone looking to buy shares, bonds, or other financial securities. Before I take you through on how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya, I will highlight for you some important insights of the stock market in Kenya.

Understanding the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE)

This is the equivalent of New York Stock Exchange. The Nairobi Securities Exchange is a marketplace where shares of publicly listed companies are bought and sold. Trading on the NSE can provide two types of income:

Dividends: A share of profits paid out by the company.
Capital Gains: The profit made when you sell a stock at a higher price than what you purchased it for.
The NSE has 64 listed companies, and trading in their stocks allows you to become part-owner of those businesses. You can also invest in bonds, which are low-risk securities issued by companies or the government to raise funds.

Why Consider Trading on the NSE?

Of course, there are factors you need to consider before you think of how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya. One key reason to consider investing in the stock market is its potential for long-term growth. Unlike businesses that may face downturns due to unpredictable events (like the COVID-19 pandemic), fixed-income securities, such as bonds, can provide consistent returns through semi-annual coupon payments.

The stock market also allows for diversification. By investing in different sectors, you spread your risk and increase your chances of getting good returns.

How to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya

Getting started with trading in the NSE is simpler than many think. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya.

1.Open a CDS Account

The first step of getting started in how to buy shares on the stock market in Kenya is having a CDS account. A CDS (Central Depository System) account is a requirement for anyone looking to trade at the Nairobi Stock Exchange. This account stores all the shares you purchase.

To open a CDS account:

Visit a licensed stockbroker or trading participant (they act as intermediaries between you and the market).
Provide a copy of your ID, KRA PIN, passport photo, and a utility bill (for address verification).
Some brokers now offer online applications through mobile apps, making it possible to open your CDS account from anywhere.

2.Identify a Stockbroker

You will need a licensed stockbroker to facilitate your trades. A list of all registered stockbrokers is available on the NSE website or mobile app. You can find brokers who offer personalized services, advice, or even apps that allow you to trade directly.

3.Fund Your Trading Account

Once your CDS account is active, you need to deposit funds into it. Depending on your broker, the minimum investment can be as low as KSh 1,000. Your broker will then use these funds to buy shares on your behalf.

4.Choosing the Right Stocks

With 64 companies listed on the NSE, selecting the right stocks can be daunting. Stocks are often referred to by ticker symbols (e.g., Safaricom’s ticker symbol is SCOM).In choosing the right stocks, you should have a long-term investment plan rather than reacting to short-term market fluctuations.

5.Asses the Risks involved

It’s important to understand your risk profile before investing:
Risk Averse? Consider investing in stable companies that offer regular dividends, like Safaricom or major banks.
Willing to take on more risk? You could explore growth stocks, which may have higher potential returns but also higher volatility.
To ensure you’re making informed decisions, do your research on a company’s financial health, industry, and future prospects. Many brokers provide this guidance to clients as part of their services.

6.Monitoring Your Investments

Once you’ve bought your shares, it’s important to monitor the stock market regularly. The NSE operates Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 3 PM. Stocks are priced based on demand and supply, which means prices can fluctuate throughout the day. You can access real-time market data via your stockbroker’s online platform or the NSE website.
Avoid panic selling during downturns. Buy when others are selling and sell when others are buying. Having a long-term strategy is key to weathering market volatility.

7.Types of Returns on Investment

Now you are done worrying on how to buy shares on stock exchange market in Kenya and you should start thinking of the benefits you will get after buying your first shares. There are two major ways to earn returns when investing in the stock market:
Dividend Income: Some companies regularly pay dividends to their shareholders from their profits. These payments can be reinvested or withdrawn.
Capital Gains: The difference between the purchase price and the selling price of your shares is your capital gain. For example, if you bought Safaricom shares at KSh 25 and sold them at KSh 40, your capital gain is KSh 15 per share.

8.Shortcomings

The stock market is inherently risky, but you can minimize this by:
Diversifying your portfolio: Don’t put all your money into one stock. Spread your investments across different sectors and companies.
Staying informed: Regularly review company performance reports and the broader market trends.
Avoiding emotional decisions: avoid panic selling when prices drop. Stick to your plan and consult your broker before making significant changes.

how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya

The NSE provides a valuable opportunity for Kenyans to grow their wealth through long-term investments in stocks and bonds. By starting with a small amount, doing proper research, and maintaining a long-term investment plan, you can benefit from the potential growth that the stock market offers. New graduates or someone with savings and have had interest in buying shares, I hope this guide on how to buy shares on the stock exchange market in Kenya helps you. Stop looking for the right opportunity, now is a great time to open a CDS account and start investing in the stock market.

viraleflare - Creating a lifestyle of happiness

2024 has been an eventful year for Kenyans—protests fueled by bad economy just but one of the reasons. But who are the most influential Kenyans of 2024?

As each second slips, 2024 looks closer to end; Kenya continues to evolve as a nation of courageous minds and resilient spirits. There are a few individuals who stand out for their exceptional contributions across various sectors. Here’s a look at some of the most influential Kenyans of 2024, whose impact have changed the way we see this country.

Morara Kebaso

This guy is the man of the moment! A lawyer and Kenyatta University alumni, Morara Kebaso has been moving around the country exposing government failed projects. After the Kenyan government countered the recent Gen Z protest, this new tactic by Morara Kebaso seem to be working. Many Kenyans have shown him love and have started supporting him financially to continue doing what he is doing. Morara Kebaso has shown Kenyans that the people can themselves oversight the executive, without the parliament. If he is not on the road exposing failed projects, he is live on TV doing civic education. This is why Morara Kebaso is one of the most influential Kenyans of 2024.

Most Influential Kenyans of 2024
Most Influential Kenyans of 2024
Boniface Mwangi

I do not know how he does it but Boniface Mwangi never misses on the list of most influential Kenyans or does he? Well, his heroics in the Gen Z protest has earned him a place among the most influential Kenyans of 2024.Boniface Mwangi remains a vocal activist and advocate for social justice ever since 2007 when he rose to the spotlight after the post-election violence. Through his photography and activism, Mwangi continues to shed light on critical issues such as corruption, human rights abuses, and governance. His fearless approach and dedication to holding the powerful accountable in 2024 have made him a significant figure in Kenya’s civil society.

William Ruto

Well, he had to be part of this right? He is the president and many happenings in Kenya this year have been largely political right from economy to extra judicial killings. President William Ruto has been at the center of all these—one hand being defended by his followers and on the other being criticized by his opposers.Through his leadership, to counter the unprecedented Gen Z protests and restore calm, it would be wrong to say he has not been one of the most influential figures of 2024.

Hanifa

She definitely had the Kenyan government in shivers each time she tweeted or even went out to the streets. During the 2024 Gen Z protest in Kenya Hanifa was at the forefront despite many arrests and intimidations. She even went ahead to fundraise for the victims of the protests raising over 30 million Kenya shillings—money which she later used to help those who lost their loved one and pay hospital bills for those injured.

Most Influential Kenyans of 2024
Most Influential Kenyans of 2024

Even though the Gen Z movement was considered leaderless, Hanifa was somehow seen as a leader and this why she is one of the most influential Kenyans of 2024 not just in the way she fought for young people but also in the way she spent 30 million Kenya shillings, most government officials would have embezzled these funds and nothing fruitful would come out of it.

Larry Madowo

Larry Madowo has always established himself as one of Kenya’s most influential voices on the global stage. In 2024 however Madowo upped his game—he could be in Atlanta but the next morning you would see him in Kenya broadcasting to whole world live the protests in Kenya. This dedication made most Kenyans fall in love with his reporting as well as patriotism. His insightful reporting on African issues and global affairs has garnered widespread attention, bringing a unique African perspective to international audiences.

One of his iconic moments of 2024 was when he reported that Ethiopian airline had kicked out a passenger on his flight because a minister had taken her seat. The next day the airline responded by saying Larry was lying only for Larry to prove them wrong by bringing concrete evidence that indeed a passenger was kicked out.

The influence of these remarkable Kenyans extends across various sectors, from politics and economics to sports, media, and environmental conservation. Their contributions not only shape the present but also pave the way for a better future for Kenya and its people. As we look forward to the rest of 2024, these individuals will undoubtedly continue to inspire and lead the nation towards greater heights.

In this article, we shall talk about how to monetize video content without Youtube and the alternatives 5 strategies to that you can explore outside of youtube.

Video monetization is getting paid for the videos you make, publish and share online .

This is however limited to viewership and downloads from the target audiences and not creating the video in itself. Higher views translate to higher incomes to the creator.

Youtube is by far the largest video sharing platform in the world currently but getting into its monetization program, Youtube Partner Program has become a challenge to many up and coming content creators.

Eligibility Requirements for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)

The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) serves as the gateway to unlocking advanced features and, significantly, opportunities for monetization on the platform.

To qualify for YPP, creators must meet the following criteria:

  1. Adherence to YouTube’s Monetization Policies:
Creators are required to comply with YouTube’s guidelines and policies, ensuring that their content aligns with community standards and is suitable for advertising.
  2. Minimum Number of Subscribers:
A minimum of 1,000 subscribers is essential. This threshold indicates that the channel has a substantial and engaged audience.
  3. Accumulated Watch Hours:
Creators must amass a minimum of 4,000 watch hours on their videos over the preceding 12 months. This metric serves as an indicator of the overall engagement and viewership of the channel.
  4. Geographical Location:
Eligibility is contingent on the availability of the program in the creators’ region.
  5. AdSense Account:
Creators need to have an AdSense account linked to their YouTube channel. AdSense, Google’s advertising platform, facilitates revenue generation from ads displayed on their videos.
  6. Compliance with Community Guidelines:
Channels with a history of violating community guidelines and policies may be disqualified from YPP. Creators must maintain a clean record concerning content violations.
  7. Two-Step Verification:
Security requirements necessitate the linking of a Google account associated with the YouTube channel through two-step verification.

Here is how to monetize video content without youtube and the alternative strategies you can use

To cater to your target audience, your video-on-demand website should offer various monetization models.

Conduct thorough research to identify the most suitable options for your prospects, considering both convenience and feasibility in the setup process.

Create Your Own VOD Platform

Video On Demand is technology for delivering video content, such as movies and television shows, directly to individual customers for immediate viewing (Britanica) without a traditional video playback device and a typical static broadcasting schedule.

This is done through rentals, purchases or in exchange for a monthly subscription fee.

What to consider while selecting a VOD platform

Encoding and Transcoding

This feature transforms your video content from one format to another, ensuring compatibility across various platforms and devices.

Without automatic transcoding, users would need to convert and upload each video file in multiple formats to ensure broad accessibility.
Built-in transcoding technologies simplify this process, enhancing the reach of your content with minimal effort.

CDN Delivery

Integration with a Cloud Content Delivery Network (CDN) enhances broadcasting capacity and accelerates video delivery speeds.

HTesting to ensure secure storage of your streaming infrastructure on the cloud is also crucial for optimal performance.

Video Security

Advanced security features are essential to ensure uninterrupted content delivery without the risk of third-party attacks or unauthorized leaks.

This includes platform-specific Digital Rights Management (DRM), HLS encryption, and Single Sign-On (SSO) to safeguard against malware and hackers.

Additionally, a reliable platform should incorporate password integration for secure user access.

Platform Cost

The pricing or plans for a video platform may vary based on factors such as the number of viewers, videos, and streaming hours.

These metrics determine bandwidth and storage requirements, serving as the basis for pricing. It is advisable to start with a modest plan and adjust as your business expands to manage costs effectively.

Types of VOD Streaming Monetization Models

There are five models of content monetization for VOD businesses — SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, NVOD, and PVOD.

We shall discuss some VODs with their of features, pros and cons while giving examples of each as other methods to monetize video content without Youtube and the alternatives strategies that you can explore outside of youtube .

SVOD

Subscription based Video On Demand is one way of how to monetize video content without Youtube and is an alternative strategy widely-used where viewers pay a recurring fee to access video content.

Popular platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime use this model to monetize their content. As long as user accounts remain current, members can access Netflix’s vast library of video content whenever and wherever they choose.

SVOD is not limited to video-on-demand only, it can also apply to live-streaming content, ranging from subscriptions to live sports packages or access to webinars from mentors or thought leaders.

Subscription video is very profitable to organizations as they can develop recurring revenue for as long as they see fit.

They can also club it with other monetization methods like TVOD and AVOD to drive revenue growth and offer viewers better choices.

Here are some tips to consider before you can launch your content

Find your niche

Find a topic that you are particularly good at specialize in it. Trying to mimic bigger brands like is literally the biggest mistake most independent content creators make.

Finding your niche also helps develop a personal brand for your business.

That includes a great website, a user-friendly platform, and high-quality and unique content. Your target audience will be drawn to your brand because of the kind of content you offer to them and how easy it is to access that content.

Choose your pricing

Research your competition and find out how much they are charging for their services. Offer similar pricing as your competitors if you are not sure of what the right pricing for your content is.

Free-trial has been found to be a brilliant way for your users to try out your service before subscribing.

Other aspects to consider include:

  • Use the right technology
  • Create a buzz before your launch
  • Pros of SVOD
  • SVOD services have no ads.
  • SVOD services can also provide value-adding behind-the-scenes content, extras and interviews with filmmakers.

Pros of SVODs

SVOD services bring a wide range of viewing options to viewers’ fingertips in a hyper-convenient fashion

To remain competitive, SVOD services need to consistently refresh their content libraries with either new or licensed movies and TV shows. This ensures a continuous stream of fresh options for exploration.

SVOD platforms may vary in the breadth of their offerings, catering to broader audiences or focusing on niche content with the aim of offering a more extensive and engaging selection compared to traditional television networks.

Cons of SVOD

The desire to watch specific shows often leads to subscriptions across multiple SVOD platforms. Over time, the cumulative cost of paying for several services, even if used infrequently, can become burdensome.

The quality of content on various streaming services can vary significantly. Initially appearing as a vast array of options, the selection may feel limited once you’ve viewed your preferred shows.

Moreover, SVODs have the flexibility to remove content at any moment, causing movies and TV shows to disappear without warning.

TVOD

Transactional Video On Demand is an OTT video monetization model that charges viewers a one-time fee to watch a piece of content.
With increased internet coverage it is a rather new method of how to monetize video content without Youtube and among the alternatives strategies that delivers streamed content via internet-connected devices. Examples include Amazon Prime Video, Google TV and iTunes.

There are three sub components of TVOD:

Pay-per-view (PPV)

This involves a single payment by viewers to access a particular show, event, or broadcast on a designated channel at a specified time.
Although some broadcasters may offer repeat viewings, PPV customers typically have just one opportunity to watch. This model is effective for time-sensitive occasions like boxing matches and sports games.

Electronic sell-through (EST)

In this model, viewers make a one-time payment for permanent electronic access to specific video content, such as an e-learning course or a movie.

Download-to-rent (DTR)

Viewers opt for limited access to content, typically spanning 24 or 48 hours from the initiation of viewing. This model is commonly employed by OTT providers like Amazon Prime Video.

Pros and cons of TVODs

Pros include but not limited to;

  • Accurate cost estimates:
  • Straightforward revenue distribution
  • Scalability and flexibility
  • One-time paid events

Some common cons are:

  • Difficulty to retain subscribers
  • Content visibility
  • Limited trial opportunities

AVOD

AVOD, or Ad-Supported Video On Demand, operates as a content distribution model where users can enjoy free access to video content, and the platform generates revenue through advertisements.

Service providers such as Sling TV, Crackle, YouTube, Roku Channel, Facebook Watch have used AVOD as a strategy of how to monetize video content without Youtube.

The functioning of AVOD can be broken down into the following:

  1. Free Access: Users can freely watch a variety of video content, spanning movies, TV shows, and user-generated material, without the need for a subscription fee.
  2. Advertisements: To generate revenue, the AVOD platform integrates ads into the viewing experience. These ads are typically displayed before, during, or after the content, and users are obligated to watch them in order to continue accessing the free service.
  3. Monetization: Advertisers make payments to the AVOD platform for the opportunity to showcase their ads to the platform’s user base. The revenue generated from these advertisements aids in covering the costs associated with providing users free access to content.
  4. Content Variety: AVOD platforms often present a diverse array of content to attract a wide audience. The content library may encompass movies, TV shows, news, and various other video content.
  5. Targeted Advertising: AVOD platforms may utilize targeted advertising strategies to deliver ads that are more pertinent to users based on their viewing patterns, demographics, or other relevant data. This approach aims to enhance the effectiveness of ads and improve the overall user experience.

Illustrative examples of AVOD platforms include services like YouTube (featuring ads), Tubi, and Peacock’s free tier, which incorporates advertisements. This setup allows users to enjoy free access to content, while advertisers gain exposure to a potentially expansive and diverse audience.

Pros and cons of AVOD

Pros

  • AVODs are cheaper than SVODs since they can rely on ad revenue, too.
  • AVODs offer a wide variety of content
  • For most viewers, ads are not an inconvenience.
  • Supports free content
  • Attracts larger audience
  • Targeted advertising

Cons

  • Overdependence on advertising revenue which is unpredictable and prone to changes in the market.
  • Limited revenue potential
  • Limited control over monetization
  • Ad-supported content is less appealing.

Steps to opening a blog

  1. Choose a blogging platform

The first step in starting a blog is to select a blogging platform or Content Management System (CMS) for publishing your content. A quick Google search will show you that there are several different sites available that suit bloggers from all industries

  1. Selecting a domain name and web hosting provider

If you’re thinking of starting a blog, you’ll need to choose a domain name and web hosting provider. Your domain name is the web address that people will use to access your blog (for example, “www.myblog.com”). A web hosting provider is the service that stores your blog’s files and makes them available on the internet.

When selecting a domain name, it’s important to choose something that’s memorable and easy to spell. You should also consider your blog’s niche and try to choose a name that reflects what your blog is all about. You can register a domain name through a domain registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap.

Once you’ve chosen a domain name, you’ll need to select a web hosting provider. Some popular options include Bluehost, SiteGround, and DreamHost. When selecting a web hosting provider, it’s important to consider factors like:

• Uptime: The amount of time that the server hosting your website is up and running. A strong uptime rate (99.95% or above) is a good indication that the host’s servers perform well.
• Bandwidth: The amount of data your website can transfer to visitors over a certain period of time. This factor is based on the size of your website pages as well as the amount of traffic you expect. This quick bandwidth calculator can help you determine your site’s bandwidth.

• Customer support: Customer service you can contact in the event something goes wrong. Ideally, your hosting provider should offer an online help center, offer callbacks and respond to questions and concerns on social media.

When you’ve chosen a domain name and web hosting provider, you’ll need to connect the two by updating your domain’s DNS settings. Your web hosting provider will provide you with the information you need to do this.

Choosing a domain name and web hosting provider can seem daunting, but it’s an important step in creating a successful blog. With a little research and some careful consideration, you’ll be able to find the right domain name and web hosting provider for your blog.

  1. Find the right profitable blog niche

Many novice bloggers often face a dilemma between writing about topics they are passionate about and those that promise profitability. Personally, finding a middle ground is essential, selecting a subject that ignites strong passion or deep motivation.

When you’re writing about something you’re truly passionate about, it becomes easier to maintain motivation and draw from personal knowledge and experiences. This authenticity helps keep your blog content dynamic and engaging. Additionally, adopting a first-person tone and sharing your expertise can benefit readers by providing valuable insights.

While it’s important to write about your passions, it’s equally crucial that the information presented is useful and interesting to readers. Ultimately, readers prioritize content that addresses their needs and interests. Thus, it’s essential not to focus excessively on oneself if it doesn’t serve the reader in any way.

In terms of subject selection, the options are virtually limitless, but it’s crucial to choose a specific topic area to center your blog’s content strategy around. Whether it’s fashion, real estate, travel, or sports, exploring niches within these categories allows you to carve out a unique space while still writing about what you’re passionate about.

Here are three straightforward steps for choosing the perfect blog niche:

i. Narrow down your interests
Begin by brainstorming subjects that genuinely excite you. Write down your top five to ten interests, and then delve deeper into specific areas within those subjects.

ii. Research your audience
Conduct market research to gauge the demand for your chosen niche. Tools like Google Trends can provide insights into the popularity of various topics based on search volume.

iii. Check if it’s profitable
Consider the potential profitability of your niche, even if you’re starting as a hobby blogger. Affiliate marketing is a common method for bloggers to earn money, and assessing potential revenue opportunities can inform your niche selection.

By following these steps and selecting a niche that aligns with your passions, interests, and potential profitability, you can set yourself up for success as a blogger.

  1. Select a blog name and domain

As you think about how to make a blog, the question of what to name it is probably lurking somewhere in the back of your mind.

Here is how to choose a domain name for your business

i. Use a .com extension
You’ve surely visited many websites, and it’s not hard to see that the most popular domain extension is .com, while other trusted or common options include .org and .net. But options range widely, and can include everything from .xyz to .co to .cafe to .pizza. But be careful choosing a more ludicrous option, as they can come across as unprofessional or untrustworthy.

If .com is available, go with it. If you are set on a domain but its .com variant is unavailable, .org, .net, or .co are also modest options.

ii. Keep it short and simple

If your domain name is long, it’ll be harder for people to remember, which could spell out less traffic for you. WebsiteSetup.org recommends a domain name that is 6-14 characters in length. Beyond that, a short domain name isn’t helpful if it is hard to spell or pronounce, as users will likely lose their way when trying to type your website URL.

iii. Avoid hyphens, numbers, and doubled letters.

Each of these elements is another hurdle for users to attempt to jump just to access your website. It’s not exactly intuitive to keep these characters in mind, and doubled letters can make the domain name messy and hard to read. Not to mention, all of these elements are susceptible to becoming typos as users try to search the internet for your business website.

If you’re sharing your website via word-of-mouth to clients, it’s also much harder to convey the domain name clearly when it is jumbled with hyphens, numbers, and the same letters back-to-back.

iv. Stay unique, specific, and on-brand.

With all of these things to keep in mind, it can be hard to brainstorm a domain name that is clear and concise while also remaining unique and true to your business. But it’s certainly doable. Keep your business name and what you sell at the front of your mind, and dig into your niche to make sure your domain name is also attracting the online audience you want.

v. Add keywords

Without going overboard, remember, we want something short and sweet here, do some keyword research to help direct your domain name. When you hone into keywords, you’ll also benefit from an SEO boost from your domain name and your brand. As you brainstorm keywords, look for options with low- to medium- competition so you have a chance to rank, and make sure the keywords will reflect your brand.

vi. Do your research

Aside from keyword research, there’s nothing worse than dreaming up what seems like the perfect domain name only to find yourself in hot water for unknowingly infringing on a trademarked domain. Ensure your chosen domain is truly original to you to avoid dealing with legal troubles and the painstaking process of finding yet another unique, SEO-friendly domain name.

Kenyans are often too caught up in investments and trading of securities but no one really seem to bat an eye why you should invest in money market fund in Kenya. Or even why you should not. In this dynamic landscape of investment opportunities, as A Kenyan investor it’s only feasible to seek options that provide a balance of security, liquidity, and returns. Well, money market funds (MMFs) have emerged as a compelling choice for most Kenyans offering a host of benefits tailored to the needs of today’s investors.

In this blog post I will take you through why you should invest in a money market fund in Kenya. What exactly is a money market fund, and why should you consider investing in one in 2024?

A money market fund is a type of mutual fund that primarily invests in cash and low-risk, short-term debt securities. In Kenya, MMFs typically allocate investments across various financial instruments such as fixed deposits, government bonds, and treasury bills. Managed primarily by banks and insurance firms, these funds are regulated by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), ensuring a level of oversight and transparency.

Investors contribute cash to the MMF, which is pooled and strategically invested in a diversified portfolio of financial instruments. Profits generated from these investments are subject to management fees, with the remainder distributed among investors. Returns from MMFs in Kenya typically range from 8% to 11% per annum, though these rates may fluctuate daily based on market conditions. One of the key advantages of MMFs is their liquidity. Investors have the flexibility to withdraw their funds partially or in full at any time, providing a level of accessibility not often found in other investment vehicles. Additionally, many MMFs offer seamless enrollment processes via mobile phone platforms, making it easy for investors to get started with minimal hassle.

Why you should invest in money market fund in Kenya

Here are some of the reasons you should invest in money market fund in Kenya.

Regulated and Low Risk

Regulations and the nature of risks involved in money markets funds are some of the major reasons why you should invest in money market fund in Kenya. Money market funds in Kenya are subject to stringent regulations which in turn minimizes the risk for investors. The oversight provided by regulatory authorities ensures that fund managers adhere to strict investment guidelines, enhancing the safety of investors’ capital.

High Liquidity

Unlike certain long-term investments, money markets funds in Kenya offer high liquidity, allowing investors to access their funds whenever needed without incurring penalties.

Competitive Returns

Another reason why you should invest in money market funds in Kenya is competitive returns. With returns typically exceeding those of traditional savings accounts, MMFs provide an attractive option for investors seeking to grow their wealth while minimizing risk.

Accessibility

The convenience of mobile-based enrollment makes MMFs accessible to a wide range of investors, democratizing access to investment opportunities.

Disadvantages of Money Market Funds

While there are a number of reasons why you should invest in money market fund in Kenya, investing in MMF has some few disadvantages just like every good thing out there.

Low Returns

While money market funds may offer competitive returns compared to savings accounts, they may yield relatively lower returns than other investment options such as equities or real estate.

Tax and Management Fees

Investors should be aware of the impact of withholding tax and management fees on their returns. While these fees are often modest, they can impact overall profitability.

Despite potential drawbacks, investing in a money market fund remains a prudent choice for many Kenyan investors in 2024. The combination of regulatory oversight, liquidity, and competitive returns makes MMFs an attractive option for those seeking to preserve and grow their wealth.

Whether you’re a seasoned investor or just starting on your financial journey, exploring why you should invest in money market funds in Kenya can provide a solid foundation for achieving your investment goals. By understanding the dynamics of MMFs and carefully evaluating your risk tolerance and investment objectives, you can make informed decisions that align with your financial aspirations.

2024 presents a compelling opportunity for investors in Kenya to consider the advantages of money market funds as part of their investment strategy. With the potential for steady returns, low risk, and high liquidity, MMFs offer a versatile option for building a diversified investment portfolio tailored to your individual needs and aspirations.

viraleflare - Creating a lifestyle of happiness

How times have changed, never in my life did I ever think of writing about worst courses to study in Kenya; every course used to be lucrative at least not today .Choosing the right course to pursue in higher education is a crucial decision that can significantly impact one’s future. While Kenya offers a diverse range of academic opportunities, not every course may align with an individual’s interests, goals, or the current job market demands.

In this blog post, I will delve into some of the worst courses to study in Kenya. These courses may be considered less favorable in Kenya—the blog as well covers the reasons behind their reputation and offering insights into making informed educational choices.

Worst Courses to study in Kenya

Please not that this list may keep changing because taste, preference as well as demands and supply forces of the job market keep changing.

Bachelor of Commerce (Bcom)

While a Bachelor of Commerce may seem like a versatile degree, the generic nature of some programs could pose challenges for graduates. Bachelor of commerce being one of the worst does not necessarily equate it to a bad course—just that it is crowded with way too many graduates and securing a job isn’t easy.

Specializations such as Finance, Marketing, or Accounting are highly sought after, but a broad Bachelor of Commerce without a specific focus might not provide the depth of knowledge needed in today’s competitive job market. Employers often seek candidates with specialized skills, and a generic commerce degree may not make graduates stand out. For a very long time a general Bcom degree has always been one of the worst courses to study in Kenya.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

Another fine course just like its name but is slowly dying right in front of our eyes. Pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts can be a passion-driven choice, but the practicality of this degree in the Kenyan job market is often questioned. Limited opportunities and a niche demand for fine arts professionals can make it challenging for graduates to find stable and well-paying jobs. Those considering this path should weigh their passion against the potential career limitations. If it is entirely passion then treat it as passion but I do not think it is worth pursuing as a degree.

Bachelor of Philosophy

Methinks philosophy is like talent, you either have it or not, you are either born with it or not. Great philosophers like Socrates didn’t have to study in order to be termed the greatest or did they? While philosophy fosters critical thinking and analytical skills, a Bachelor of Philosophy might be perceived as less practical in terms of direct career applications. The job market in Kenya typically demands more specialized skills, and graduates with philosophy degrees may find it challenging to secure positions directly related to their academic background.

Bachelor of Library and Information Science

Not to look down on anyone pursuing this but in this era of digital information and advanced technology, the demand for traditional library and information science professionals has diminished. With the shift towards digital resources and online information management, graduates in this field might face challenges finding relevant and well-compensated positions in the job market. Technology has made this course irrelevant and one of the worst courses to study in Kenya.

Bachelor of Music

Similar to fine arts, pursuing a Bachelor of Music may be a passion-driven choice, but the practicality of this degree in Kenya’s job market may be limited. The entertainment industry in Kenya may not provide sufficient opportunities for graduates in music, making it challenging to establish a stable career. Also people have gotten used to seeing people with no background in music education succeed in music so no one really cares if you have a degree in music. What you can do even those without degree are doing.

Other courses that might also be considered the worst courses to study in Kenya may fall in the following categories;

Outdated Technology Courses

Technology is always a work in progress; its changing nature may render certain courses outdated, leaving graduates with skills that are no longer in demand. It’s essential to stay ahead of the curve, and unfortunately, some technology-related courses fail to keep pace with industry advancements. As a result, graduates may struggle to find relevant job opportunities in the competitive job market.

Oversaturated Fields

It is not just Bcom but some professions in Kenya are oversaturated as well. This oversaturation has led to fierce competition for limited job openings. Fields such as journalism, law, and business administration often witness a surplus of graduates, making it challenging for individuals to stand out and secure lucrative positions. Prospective students should carefully consider the demand and supply dynamics of their chosen field before making a commitment.

Lack of Professional Accreditation

If you are planning to study a course that lacks professional accreditation then it definitely falls in the category of worst courses to study in Kenya. Certain courses lack proper accreditation from relevant professional bodies, diminishing their credibility in the job market. Graduates from non-accredited programs may encounter obstacles in obtaining professional certifications or licenses, restricting their career advancement. Prospective students should thoroughly research the accreditation status of a course before enrollment.

While this list highlights some of the worst courses to study in Kenya, it’s vital to recognize that individual preferences, aptitudes, and market dynamics play a significant role in determining the success of any academic pursuit. Instead of dismissing specific courses outright, prospective students should carefully evaluate their personal interests, the current job market trends, and the potential for continuous learning and adaptation within their chosen field. Making informed decisions ensures that one’s educational journey aligns with both personal aspirations and the demands of the ever-evolving professional landscape.
