Karim Benzema was officially honored the most prestigious individual football award on earth as the French striker was crowned Ballon D’or 2022 winner. The Real Madrid attacker became the first French to win the coveted award after Zinedine Zidane in 1998, that’s 24years ago.

Benzema wins 2022 Ballon D’or

Benzema had a sensational season scoring a total of 44 goals in all competitions. This record saw him help Madrid win La Liga and memorable Champions League double. The ceremony which was held on Monday in Paris, France, saw Benzema placed clear off the likes of Salah who came 5th, Ronaldo staged at 20th spot (the worst he managed since 2005) and Lionel Messi who didn’t make it to the shortlist for the first time in his prestigious career. Messi had dominated this award and had won it back to back in 2020 and 2021.

The 34 year old Benzema was delighted as he received the award from his idol Zinedine Zidane. “I’m proud, this is a childhood dream. I grew up with this in my head, then I had the motivation. I had two role models in life; Zizou and Ronaldo.

I have never lowered my efforts and I have kept the dream in my head, even through a period in which I was not in the national team,” said Benzema. “But I did not lower my efforts and it worked. It has been difficult and this only made me stronger mentally. I am satisfied with my work and I am very happy. I thank my teammates at Real Madrid and the national team.”

Top 3 Ballon d’or contestants

Sadio Mane who had a remarkable season with Liverpool before switching to Fc Bayern Munich came agonizingly close in the second position. The Senegalese international won The FA and community shield cups with Klopp’s side as the Reds narrowly missed on EPL which was full of drama and uncertainty on the last day of the season.

The Bayern winger would later on lose to Benzema’s Real Madrid in June as the Spanish giants played their way out to clinch Champions League trophy at the expense of Mane and Liverpool thanks to Vinicius Junior’s solitary goal in the second half of the match.

Kevin Debruyne was ranked third. The Belgian has been sensational in midfield since his arrival at city and despite winning the premier league, he couldn’t match either Benzema or Mane with the latter while still at Liverpool competing in all football matches available for them last season winning two out of possible four.

In the women’s category, Alexia Putellas clinched this prestigious award Ballon d’or Feminin for the second successive season. The Barcelona star was closely contested by England and Arsenal’s striker Beth Mead. Alexia led Barcelona to La Liga as they historically won all their domestic games. Similarly, Beth had earlier won player of the year when she led England to win Euros. The Arsenal’s starlet becane the second English female player to make it to top three of Ballon d’or following Lucy Bronze who did so for the first time in 2019. Sam Kerr of Chelsea ranked 3rd for second successive season.

Barcelona’s midfielder Gavi won the world’s best U21 player as he was presented with Kopa trophy. The Spanish youngster piped Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich and Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid as they came second and third respectively. Speaking at the event, the 18 years old thanked his team mates for the support. “It’s an honor to receive this award. I want to thank Barcelona, the coaches and my teammates.” he said, “I’m here today for them. I always try to give my best and I try to carry it in the best way.”

Gavi wins Kopa Trophy

Thibaut Courtois clinched the Yashin Trophy as he was named goalkeeper of tge year ahead of Liverpool’s Alison Becker. The 30 year old Belgian had a remarkable season with Real Madrid and his heroics against Liverpool in the Champions League factored him to leapfrog the 2019 winner Alison.

The Brazilian was closely followed by his international team mate Ederson in the third position. The Man City’s shotstopper was among the top ball handlers who kept most cleansheets across Europe alongside Eduard Mendy of Chelsea who ranked fourth.

Salah scores to help Liverpool beat reigning champions Man City 1-0 in a thrilling encounter at at Anfield.

Moh Salah inspires Liverpool to a 1-0 win over ManCity

The Red’s who had a task of stopping free scoring Haaland and City faced more problems as they had to bring in James Milner to play right back after Konate had picked an injury late in the warm up. Milner replaced Joe Gomez who had shifted to a more central role partnering Van Dijk.

Liverpool started the game on the right tone as they pushed city to sit deep and defend in the first quarter of the game but they failed to create any meaningful impact from the possession. Manchester City would then pounce back into the game and boast possession in better part of the game.

Salah constantly threatened the city’s defense line with his constant runs in and out trying to undress them and create a clear chances for himself & team mates. The Egyptian had just returned to starting line up after being benched in UEFA Champions League match against Rangers in mid-week though was introduced later on & grabbed a hat-trick.

Although both teams had half chances, Liverpool looked more vulnerable to conceding. Haaland spurned a couple of headers after Kevin De Bruyne deployed his trademark crosses to find him in the penalty yard. The 22 year old Norwegian tried chipping a clear cut chance over on rushing Alison Becker after a beautiful pass by Ikay Gundogan but the Liverpool goal keeper was spot on to keep the inform City striker at bay.

Liverpool similarly failed to capitalize on their opportunities. Diogo Jota failed to convert from a close range header after Salah flicked the ball past City’s defense to find him unmarked sending it straight into the hands of Ederson. The Portuguese would later on blaze the ball over the post after left back Andrew Robertson sent a fling cross to him. Both teams held firm to see it go halfway on barren draw.

The game sprung to life in second half as both teams knocked on each other’s goals. The attacking spree began with Roberto Firmino as the Brazilian picked Salah who managed to beat Man City’s offside trap & ran straight at goal only to be denied by Ederson after he tipped the ball far & wide off the target.

Pep Guardiola’s men would then turn on to counter attack the red’s leading to a goal. Haaland, De Bruyne and Phil Foden combined at the edge of the box before Foden squeezed the ball into the net via deflection off Gomez who was outstanding throughout the game. VAR had to intervene and the goal was ruled out after it was deemed that Haaland had fouled Fabinho in the build up.

Reprieve for Liverpool after the goal cancelation and they attacked again but Jota once more couldn’t direct his header into the net from close range. Salah had once again a flick of the ball above the defenders to pick up the Portuguese at the far left but his header went over the cross bar. City responded with Haaland coming close after hitting the ball which was saved by superb Alison to deny him from 13 yards.

It was Liverpool who had a breakthrough soon afterwards through Mohamed Salah. The prolific winger outsmarted Joao Cancelo as he controlled the ball from Alison counter attack kick & ran through goal dunking the ball over Ederson for a goal.

The reigning champions tried to charge themselves back into the game as tension boiled in the later stages but Liverpool soaked the pressure. Darwin Nunez who came in as substitute in the second period failed to either convert or pass it Salah to finish it off after finding pocket of space in 3 vee 1 situation in city’s defense.

Jurgen Klopp was later on shown a red card by Anthony Taylor for heckling at the officials. Klopp expressed his frustration following a wave of play on by Taylor despite Bernado Silva fouling Salah. Contrary, Guardiola was also furious earlier on the other side following the Foden’s goal cancelation with the VAR showing that city players Bernado and Haaland had drawn fouls in both occasions with the latter going unpunished.

Liverpool came into the game with worst start of EPL season in a decade as they had amarsed 10 points from 8 games and 13 points a drift off their opponents, City. On the contrary, City came into the game having not lost a single game this season and with a single draw so far trailing Arsenal who were at the top of the table with one point ahead of them.

Klopp now turns the team’s attention to Wednesday as they host Westham at Anfield. Red’s 1-0 win over City could be a potential turn around of events for the remainder of the season as they left the citizens with much needed catch up to do against surprise table toppers Arsenal.

Man City XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Dias, Akanji, Ake; De Buryne, Rodri, Gundogan; Silva, Haaland, Foden

Moh Salah came off the bench to score UEFA Champions League fastest ever hat-trick as he helped Liverpool wound Rangers 7-1.

The Reds started the game in a wrong footing again as they conceded first in the early stages of the game. Fashion Sakala robbed possession off Fabio Carvalho before handing the ball over to Rayan Jack who sported the unmarked Scott Arfield just outside the box. The 33 years old Canadian didn’t hesitate to bury it beyond Alison into the net. This was met by an uproar at Ibrox by the home fans as they took the lead.

Liverpool were once again handed an uphill task of coming from behind away from home in a match which was crucial in keeping their Champions League hopes alive. Jurgen klopp’s men responded seven minutes later with Roberto Firmino equalising. Tsimikas whooped his corner with precision to find the Brazilian near post as nervy Sakala misjudged the header to see the in form ‘false’ nine convert.

The mersyside Reds controlled the first half while showing a better Liverpool from the team that had a disappointing 3-2 Sunday’s defeat in the hands of Arsenal at Emirates. Fashion Sakala caused Tsimikas problems at the right flank and so did the Ex-Liverpool academy player Rayan Kent on the left side who constantly got Gomez worried but alert. Although they looked shaky at times on counter attacks, the reds held on to a 1-1 as both teams proceeded to the changing rooms for half time team talk.

Returning in the second period of the game, Liverpool did better as they controlled the ball high pitch and closed down every Ranger player. Joe Gomez picked the ball from right corner and after a one two passes with Virgil Van Djik and Thiago Alcantara, the England international drove the ball up the pitch before whipping it across the goal for Firmino to tap it in completing his brace for the night. The inform number 9 later set up Darwin Nunez to make it 3-1 before being substituted.

Introduction of Salah, Jota, Thiago and Robertson between 66th and 73rd minutes increased game tempo. Liverpool’s speed became unmatched by the weary Rangers as Klopp’s side started playing with vigor and confidence while already leading with 3 goals.

Salah immediately had an impact as he teamed up with fellow substitute Diogo Jota to see him with three assists as the Egyptian scored a hat-trick inside 6min and 16 seconds breaking a number of records in the process. Harvey Elliott would later add on salt to the injury for Rangers. The youngster with a close range half volley made it 7 for Liverpool as he grabbed his fast ever Champions League goal. Though the lineman had flagged Elliott’s goal as an offside, VAR reversed the decision and the goal stood.

Moh Salah’s Champions League Record;

~Fastest Champions League hat-trick (6min, 16sec). This placed him above record holder Bafetimbi Gomis who scored his hat-trick for Merseille in the UEFA Champions League in 2011 against Dynamo Zagreb of Croatia.

~All time UEFA Champions League topscorer playing in EPL (38 goals and still counting). The Egyptian king leapfrogs Didier Drogba who had 36 goals under his belt while at Chelsea.

The overall performance and scoreline at the end of the game now ushers Liverpool into a more hardened test as Klopp’s men will be taking on Manchester City this weekend at Anfield. Will they rock anfield or can City pile more misery? That’s the question that will be answered on Sunday after the late kick off game.

Zambia and Brighton Midfielder Enock Mwepu retires aged 24. Mwepu who plays for Brighton in EPL has been forced to early retirement due to an hereditary heart condition. The Zambian retires from active football action aged 24.

Mwepu retires aged 24

The Zambia international player had suffered from an illness while on his flight to rejoin with fellow team mates during the just concluded international break. Although he comoleted his flight and was hospitalized shortly in Mali before he flew back to England and further cardiac related test done on him.

Mwepu had joined Brighton from RB Salzburg in 2021 and has since then played 27 games with six of them coming in this 2022-2023 campaign just before the break. The Zambian has featured 23 times for country registering 6 goals in all competitions.

The seagulls has since expressed their support towards Mwepu with the club stakeholders, EPl fraternity and Zambia football association releasing support statement to the effect of his early retirement triggered by cardiac setbacks. The club chairman Tony Bloom, former manager Graham Potter and current manager De Zerbi relishing him and disappointment Mwepu has been subjected to.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s away Champions League clash with AC Milan, former Brighton manager Graham Potter said that it was a terrible news to learn of Mwepu’s predicament. “It’s really terrible. Thankfully it isn’t as terrible as it maybe could have been because I think he has been a little bit lucky, as much as he can be lucky, in terms of being alive and well.

Which is something we are all really thankful for. But, of course, at 24 years old, to not be able to play football just puts everything into perspective, “Potter said. “I tried calling him today and sent him a message. He’s a fantastic person, so whatever he does in his life, he’ll succeed, but it’s a shame we won’t see him on the football pitch.”

Similarly, the newly appointed Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi was looking forward to working with the Zambian before illness cut the chances. “I am so sorry for Enock, before I arrived I looked at all the squad, and he was a player I was so excited and looking forward to working with. We will do everything we can to help him,” said De Zerbi.

Similarly, Tony Bloom said that the club was ‘devastated’ for Mwepu. “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock, he and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age. As a club we will give him all the love, help and support we possibly can to make a full recovery, and then as he decides on the next steps in his life,” the chairman said.

Although his career has been cut shot, the Zambian through a statement he released has relished staying in football at some capacity. “A small boy from a Zambian township called Chambishi has some news to share, he stood strong to follow his dream of playing football at the highest level and by the grace of God he lived his dream by reaching the Premier League. Some dreams however come to an end, so it is with sadness that I announce the need to hang up my boots because of the medical advice I have received. This is not the end of my involvement in football, I plan to stay involved in some capacity.” He wrote.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance secures a thrilling 2-1 Manchester United win against Everton.

Manchester United produced a masterclass in the first half of the Sunday’s late kick off as they outplayed Frank Lampard’s Everton to win 2-1.

cr7 scored 700th career goal as Man Utd beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park

Alex Iwobi opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a ferocious shot outside the box. The super eagles international fired Everton into the lead after his effort went past De Gea into the top right corner.

United responded ten minutes later through Antony who made a clean run behind Everton defense to meet Anthony Martial’s pass before producing a sublime finish beyond Jordan Pickford.

Eric Ten Hag then lost Martial to injury. The french international had picked a hip injury in warm up and though was cleared to feature for united, he had to be substituted just before the half hour mark as the injury constrained his movement.

Ronaldo sealed the victory for the Red Devils before half time as he came off the bench to replace Martial. Casemiro played a superb assist to the prolific winger who didn’t hesitate to send a fierce shot on goal and past Pickford to mark his 700th club career goal in style.

Frank Lampard’s side resumed the final half of the game with intent and constantly caused unrest to the United’s defense. The Toffees failed to create a clear cut chance to get back into the game despite enjoying better part of the final half.

Manchester United scored a third via Marcus Rashford after Ronaldo squared a flick pass to him but the goal was ruled out for handball. Video Assisting Referee showed that the English youngster had handled the ball in the build up leading to the goal. The win pushed United into 5th position in the EPL table with 15 points after playing a total of eight games this season.

Ten Hag a lot of positive words about his team and couldn’t help but praise them for the huge results away at Merseyside. “Goodison Park is difficult, the crowd behind but they are in a good run, seven games unbeaten. “We were quickly 1-0 down but the reaction of the team was good,

One of our aims is to deal better with setbacks and they stayed composed, played out of the game. It was quite impressive from our side.” Ten Hag said. “In the first half we were pressing well. Everton did not come out and it was difficult for them to get a lot of crosses in, we didn’t allow them and I am happy with that. Casemiro will anticipate quickly and we saw during the game how important he is, winning a lot of balls.

He also played the ball for Ronaldo. He grew into the game.” He added. “The ball can always come in, we should have scored already for a third and then it was game over. That is the next step we have to make, happy with the result of course and also for a lot of periods happy with the performance.

The Gunners fired themselves past nervy Liverpool as they win 3-2 to clinch back top spot from on fire Manchester City.

Arsenal edge Liverpool 3-2

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have been flying high as they rushed to scoring with just 58 seconds of the start of first half registering an important win over Liverpool thereafter. Gabriel Martinelli opened the sheet after a swift counter attack that saw the Brazilian convert a fierce shot past fellow countryman Alison Becker. Bukayo Saka capitalized on Thiago Alcantara’s error to spot Martin Odegard whom with his abilities and technicality splitting the Reds midfield with a sumptuous pass to find Martinelli on the left flank.

The strange first half saw Liverpool dominate but they couldn’t turn the fine tune they have been for the past years under Jurgen Klopp. Klopp’s men showed flashes of form with their opening goal as Trent Alexander Arnold swerved an overhead pass to Luiz Diaz who timed his run and squared his pass across Gunners goal for Darwin Nunez to sweep it home for Liverpool equalizer.

A good part of the half saw Liverpool press on Arsenal with their new 4-5-1 formation. Diaz was denied a penalty shout out after his attempt to overhead reverse control landed the ball into the hands of Gabriel Maghlaes as the referee waved play on.

The game turned sour for Liverpool after another swift counter attack by Arsenal set on Saka to break the tie 2-1 at half time. The red’s once again were forced to come from behind and level score through Boby Firmino. The second half Brazilian substitute reached for the far corner having found a nick pass from Diogo Jota as he calmly slotted the ball home.

Arsenal completed their win by through a penalty after Thiago was charged for fouling Gabriel Jesus inside the eighteen yard box. Saka rounded his brace as he converted the penalty witb some pace despite Alison going the right direction. The win was vital to Arteta as this could be the game changer towards their persuit to being crowned champions this season. Talking to press in his post match conference, he said “The feeling of winning it’s so powerful and so meaningful for me because I saw a team that I feel I really identify with, the personality they show in difficult moments, how they stick to what they have to do, and at the same time they believe they have the courage and the free mind to just go for it and attack them and put them under pressure.”

Arsenal edge rusty liverpool 3-2
Arsenal edge rusty liverpool 3-2

The win over Liverpool piled more misery to Klopp and his team as this is the worst form shown after 8 games played in over a decade and under Klopp’s erra. The Red’s have managed 10 points so far and problems seems to mount up for the former European giants as they sit at tge bottom half of the premier league table. Trent Alexander Arnold and Luiz Diaz are waiting for scans over the knocks they picked during the game and might be sidelined for a longer period adding themselves to the growing injury list that Liverpool already are bearing.

Klopp in his post match interview siad, “1-0 down, really bad start but started controlling the game, played a really good game against a very aggressive, full-of-confidence Arsenal side. But we really showed that we are here for a reason. We scored the equaliser, a wonderful goal, great play and open game, could go either way I think with advantages for us, more possession, more finishes, these kind of things. Then we make a bad decision before half-time with the free-kick and that’s the situation where you ignore a free-kick – I’m completely guilty for that. That’s an excuse from my side, you can say I was surprised… ‘Yeah, what are we doing?’ But then the boys are convinced, ‘Let’s score a goal.’ But we didn’t, we conceded one on the other end. Like after the worst possible start, now we had the worst possible end to the first half.”

“I told the boys that we have to try to obviously cut off the two goals and build on the good stuff. But that means you have to play football again and that’s what we didn’t do. Yes, Arsenal came out again very aggressive, man v man against Hendo and Thiago, but we were not flexible enough anymore in the front line – so didn’t drop in the right moments, didn’t offer half-spaces, apart from the goal from where we did that obviously particularly well. Then we scored the equaliser and now it’s a really open game I think with, again, a slight advantage for us but then the penalty happens,” he added.

Xabi Alonso has been appointed as the new Bayer Leverkusen coach in a two year contract.

The former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich prolific midfielder agreed to sign a contract which up to the moment runs until 30th June 2024 replacing Gerardo Seoane who parted ways with Leverkusen following a sticky start to the season. The 2-0 loss of Bayer away to Porto on Tuesday saw Xabi take over Seone’s job position as the Spanish is yet to be tested on whether he can overcome Gerardo’s shortfalls. Seoane joined Leverkusen from Swiss club Young Boys in 2021 and managed them to finish 3rd in Bundesliga last campaign in his one and half year coaching spell with the German club but the Swiss have equally fell short in the champions league this season as much as he has in Bundesliga, loosing all the games and risk dropping to Europa League.

Bayer have managed a total of 5 points out of possible 24 points after 8 games. The Swiss last Bundesliga game ended in 4-0 rout by Bayern Munich away at Alianz Arena as Leverkusen suffered the 5th loss of the season. Having been knocked out of DFB Pokal by third tier team SV 07 Elversberg in the first round at the start of the season, Bayer Leverkusen lies 17th in the Bundesliga table just four points above last placed Vfl Bochum.

Speaking to media on Wednesday, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said, “in Xabi Alonso we have signed a coach who, as a player, was an absolute world-class professional for many years, an intelligent strategist and very successful in three of the most demanding European leagues.”

More About Xabi Alonso

“Gerardo Seoane did good work for Bayer 04 over the past year and a half, especially with the excellent qualification for the Champions League. Unfortunately, we have strayed from the road to success, ” the director added.

Alonso’s first game will be on Saturday at home against FC Schalke 04 with the Spanish midfielder looking forward to start on a high note by delivering Leverkusen its second win of the season.

Xabi who hanged his boots in 2017 and since has been working as the headcoach of Real Sociedad B until 2021 when he left the club.

Leicester City beat Nottingham to win the mini derby. Brendan Rodgers men register their first EPL win in 2022-2023 campaign on monday night at king power stadium.

The foxes opened the scoring through James Maddison as his shot got a ricochet off the hands of Nottingham’s defender Lewis Cook directing it past the goalkeeper into the net. Jammie Vardy received the ball at the far wing of the pitch and unmarked squaring in for Maddison who was well placed outside the eighteen yard box before powerfully striking it. The foxes had started the game with intent and maintained the tempo as the looked up for their first win of the season.

Nottingham had the first real opportunity of the game through their striker Taiwo Awoniyi but the former Liverpool player could not direct his low shot into the net as the ball went past Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward but ended up hitting the outpost. A couple of minutes later the foxes had the lead.

Brendan Rodgers men then doubled their lead two minutes later through Harvey Barnes whose efforts curled into the net past the goalkeeper. Maddison would later pile more misery to relegation threatened Nottingham forest by delivering a sumptuous free kick leaving Dean Henderson flat footed.

Both teams headed to the dressing room at half time with Steve Cooper’s men trailing 3-0. The forest Reds started the final half with intent but yet again Awoniyi couldn’t score in the 52nd minute after being played a long pass by Mckenna which found him one vee one with Leicester keeper Danny Ward.

He tried lobbying the ball over the goalkeeper who was wondering in no man’s land but his efforts were parred away and the ball fell to his team mate Johnson who failed to control the ball before finishing into an empty net.

Leicester’s final goal

Patson Daka caped Leicester’s win by adding a fourth goal after coming off the bench. The 23 year old Zambian received a sweep cross from Maddison and flicked it to the near post past the legs of Henderson in the 72nd minute. The win saw Leicester leapfrog Nottingham in the table with hopes that they rapidly replicate the performance in coming games and rise up again.

It was a long waited win for the foxes and Rodgers admitted if the same in his post match interview.

“It’s been too long, to be honest. We were excellent tonight – the intensity, the pressing. It’s a great night for the players and the supporters. I said before the match that it could be a season-changing game. We’ve played well with the ball this season, but against the ball in key moments we haven’t defended well. Tonight, we did that and we got our first clean sheet, which is important,” said Rodgers.

On the contrary, Forest Reds woes continue as the manager blamed the loss and poor performance on lack of blend among team members as they had just overhauled the previous team and brought in new players over the summer. “I said after the Fulham game that we look very vulnerable off conceding a goal. And we’ve done it again.

If you actually look at the second goal, it’s come from not winning a competitive moment quite high up the pitch. If you don’t do that and you give teams like Leicester, a technical team, space, then they will progress up the pitch – and they have good players to make a difference.

That was particularly annoying, if I’m being honest, in the game, where we did that again. It’s not something we’ve ignored, because of what has happened in previous games,” Cooper said.

“I’m not soft with the players, that’s the last thing I am, but I refuse to be really critical of them as a group, because we’re all in this really tough challenge together. Tactically, first half, we were not what we planned to be. That had a big impact on the rhythm of the game and the momentum Leicester had. That was frustrating. Also, I didn’t like us in the duels in the first half.

There wasn’t enough competitive moments, duels, one-v-ones, fight-balls, second-balls, whatever you want to call it, where I felt we were coming out on top. It was the opposite. Because of those two things, we ended up giving too much space for Leicester to play as they wanted to play and, in the end, getting around our box. When you do that at this level, you run the risk of creating chances and conceding goals, and that’s what happened.“But we should score before they score. If someone had said we would have a chance to go 1-0 up, then I would have bitten whoever’s hand off.”

“We are not taking those moments in games and scoring when we should. But also, we are having phases in games where we are letting the result run away from us – and we’ve done it again, with two goals in a couple of minutes and then a third.Although we made changes and did better in the second half, the game was too far away from us. It’s frustrating.” He concluded.

Nottingham will be hoping to get their first win of the season as they welcome Aston Villa next Monday while Leicester travel to Vitality stadium to face Bournemouth on Sunday.
